The click is starting to disappear
Today, buying something online is obvious: we choose, click, approve and pay. In an agentic experience, a request such as 'Upgrade me to Premium. Keep it under SGD 20 and use an approved payment option' could move through an AI assistant, service system, payment route, provider and entitlement system. The experience becomes simpler for the human while the decision chain underneath becomes more distributed.
The infrastructure is evolving
AI agents are adding a new layer to systems that already connect businesses, platforms and payment networks. NIST's AI Agent Standards Initiative focuses on trusted, secure and interoperable agent ecosystems. Google's Agent Payments Protocol addresses verifiable user authorization across agents, merchants and payment providers, while Mastercard's Verifiable Intent connects identity, intent and action. These developments show active industry work rather than a single settled architecture.
The question that matters to the human
Several legitimate systems can make valid decisions in sequence and still drift from what the human meant. If a preferred provider is unavailable, a currency changes or a product term changes, the important question is not only whether each agent is authenticated, but whether the original mandate still covers the next action.

What happens when AI agents act across company boundaries?
A single human request can pass through multiple agents, providers and systems. The technical challenge is interoperability; the governance challenge is preserving the scope of the human or organisational authority as decisions move through that chain.
